Cafe Create - Holy Trinity Church

If you’re looking for a cheap place for a coffee and something to eat, you could do a lot worse than this cafe based in Holy Trinity Church off Boar Lane. It’s decorated brightly, with mismatched chairs, and always seems to have loads of old people in it, which is always a good sign. Old people know a good cafe.

If I recall correctly all coffees are under two quid, and there’s a nice selection of cakes for less than a pound. The rest of the menu is very cheap, soup of the day is about one fifty, and there’s standard cafe fare like baked potatoe’s, quiche, sandwiches and whatnot. Everything is home made, and you can really tell. The chips are particularly good, freshly fried and with the skins still on.

So if you’re sick of chain coffee places and a rushed greggs pasty as you traipse through town, this place is definitely worth a go.

Karachi (Bradford)

Hoho, the irony, first post and it’s not even in Leeds! Alright you can stop laughing now.

Personally, I think us Leeds folks should give Bradford a chance, and sample it’s many delights. Ok, so there may be a higher density of lunatics wandering the streets shouting, but that neither here nor there. If you can look beyond such things, then you can enjoy an excellent curry for cheap at Karachi. On top of a wind swept hill near the ice rink, the decor is so crappy, you know they must put effort into the food, or at least hope so.

We took a seat by a window with a view over a concrete yard, just by the framed newspaper clipping of Rick Stein (he visited on a programme). The waiter called over “I’ll be over in a minute lads”. The fact that I’m not a lad can be over looked, I think. These mistakes can happen. Anyway, he brought over a complementary jug of tap water, and realising his previous error, apologised. The menu is slightly confusing maybe, but more than makes up for it by being laminated. I ordered chicken rogan josh, whilst my dining partner went for chicken karachi. Both were about six pounds, and arrived very quickly with a basket of six chappatis between us. The karachi came sizzling in one of those cast iron thingies, and my rogan josh arrived topped with fresh coriander and pepper. The curries were lovely, with decent chunks of chicken just generally tasted like a good curry should. The chappatis (that came free, by the way) were really nice and fresh, not at all crusty and stale like you can get. I asked if they did puddings, and they don’t, but they do do indian sweets if you fancy something to finish of the meal. I also gather you can bring your own booze if you want to.

Over all, this place is great. And for six quid each for a good feed up with very good curry, you really can’t complain.

Intro…

Hello, the point of this blog is to find and review the very cheapest of eateries in the Leeds area, an arduous task undertaken for the benefit of the people of said city. Cheap will be defined as under £15 a head, including a drink or two, and just a main, because that’s how I eat.

Please do send in your suggestions to cheapeats@live.co.uk, and I’ll do my best to investigate.

Happy eating
